Got a genre that is not on the list of choices? Then add it to the list here and we'll see if it's appropriate and then if so [Font] will put it towards [Hedda]. This page is ran by [-deleted-] so feel free to ask him anything.

New! Perhaps the best way to approach this would be to have a section where you could select either fictional or factual, then select genre, then target market.

So having Factual - travel, (which could be about Spain) would be noticeably different from Fictional - Travel (which could be about a made up land) then with the addition of target group you could extend the categorization of your work to: Fictional - Travel - Young Adult

To make this more logical I have removed the following genres.

removed genres: Non-fiction, Young Adult Fiction

Also Please vote at Genre Poll. Sorry to anyone who had listed their name as a supporter!

2005-06-23 [Hedda]: Can I have a list of supporters on every suggestion? So that I know how many that actually are writing that.

2005-06-23 [Veltzeh]: So, we'll add our name after every suggestion?

2005-06-23 [Shanra]: Can't we add a short description of the genre as well in that case? Just so people know what WritersCo will decide falls under that category. I still think multiple options as compared to a drop-down menu is preferred. Especially with genres like "psychological thriller" (see, two for the price of one and you're stuck to one choice)

2005-06-24 [Hedda]: [Veltzeh]: Yes, please!

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: I agree with [Shanra] too. Multiple checkboxes might be better than a dropdown... I think we could include some of the warnings there too (like, sex, violence, drugs and so). Okay, another question, can we make a list of those who support them all? I'm too lazy to add my name to all of them ;)

2005-06-24 [-deleted-]: I'll make a new format for it now.

2005-06-24 [-deleted-]: Could anyone who added a particular genres add a description please?

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: The possessive form of "it" is "its"...

2005-06-24 [Font]: What are you talking about?

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: "Add its description here". Of course I corrected it now...

2005-06-24 [-deleted-]: Sorry I apologise: I was, however, rushing at the time.

2005-06-24 [Shanra]: [Veltzeh], would you mind terribly much if we combine 'action' with 'adventure'? That's about the same way we define adventure novels. Sounds silly to list the same thing twice under different names. ^-^

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: No problem on my account :)

2005-06-24 [Font]: I don't see 'animals' as a genre on it's own. The description given is also very vague. It could be a fiction with animal like characters, that would be more 'fantasy fiction', or the writing could be factual; a reference book about cats for instance.

2005-06-24 [Font]: A further thought: the possibility of selecting whether the piece is factual or fictional.

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: Watership Down I guess would be just animals and maybe those Lassie things (I haven't read them though)... As for folklore and magical realism, well, I was under the impression they were different things, as magical realism is more like something very random and not some known fantasies.

2005-06-24 [Font]: Heh I had removed that part of the comment. Have a look at these two links: http://www.writing-world.com/sf/realism.shtml and http://www.qub.ac.uk/en/imperial/india/Magic.htm the genre id very problematic and encompasses a great deal but at the same time very little. It may confuse more than aid.

2005-06-24 [Shanra]: [Font], animals are listed as a seperate category in my library (read - every public library in this country). It's used to denote anthro stories mainly. Which, granted, is akin enough to fantasy to denote it as a subcategory, but I'd argue that EVERYTHING mentioned here is a) a subcategory b) incomplete, because every story does encompass multiple genres. The latter bit's just my opinion though. ^-^ It might be a good idea to have a listing and detailed description of what WritersCo defines genres as being for reference. It'd give people without a clue how to classify things *coughlikemecough* a hand. ^-~

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: Separate is spelled with an A... SepArate. ;) And again I agree with [Shanra].

2005-06-24 [Veltzeh]: [Font], the first link you gave describes magical realism as I understood it nearly perfectly (well, the part after "So, what IS magical realism"). I'd say I can pinpoint it somewhat easily. And we really need definitions of the genres, really. X)

2005-06-24 [Shanra]: I only slept one hour last night and it's too oppresing to go to bed. I call sleep deprivation! Messes up spelling. *dies of heat* Genre definitions are terrific! ^-^

2005-06-25 [Font]: If you looked in an animal section in a library you wouldnt expect to find a book detailing animals from a fantasy tale next to the inner workings of your regular mule. It is fantasy, I'd sooner class watership down as teen fiction before animals.  If we start getting nit picky about the subcategories of major categories we will end up having several genres for one area; and i'd rather not jump into the likes of having 10 genres for various elements of fantasy fiction.

2005-06-25 [Font]: 'Spelt' is the more common British-English version of the past participle of ‘spell’. 'Spelled' is more widely American-English.

2005-06-25 [Veltzeh]: Ah yeah... well, I'm probably making even mistakes when it comes to verb forms, sometimes I just forget that not every language is like Finnish where there are no irregular verbs. X)

2005-06-25 [Font]: and English is riddled with them :P

2005-06-27 [PamelaT]: Has anyone thought to add Romance? I hate the sappy things personally but I know tons of women who simply adore them. And no, I don't think they would be classified as simple fiction. They are listed as Romance in many libraries and booklists.

2005-06-28 [-deleted-]: You don't need to have to like them Pam, just add it and others may thank you.

2005-06-28 [Veltzeh]: The irony of it is the fact that it's already in the menu of genres!

2005-06-29 [-deleted-]: :O erm .. well .. yeah, don't bother

2005-06-29 [Veltzeh]: Hm, maybe we should add the already existing genres and their descriptions too...

2005-06-30 [Veltzeh]: Wouldn't saga and epic be nearly the same, or at least similar?

2005-06-30 [Shanra]: Similar, but while a saga focusses on one family epic spans whole countries. TLoTR is epic, but it's not a saga. At least, that's how the descriptions seem to me. I'm still trying to shake the meaning of a similar Dutch words. ^_^;;

2005-06-30 [Janouk]: I know about the Darren Shan saga though, which isn't exactly about a family, more about one person...

2005-06-30 [-deleted-]: I'd agree with Janouk - Sagas are normally on a smaller basis then an epic i.e. a family like Shanra said.

2005-08-11 [-deleted-]: Font, do you think it is time to suggest any of these to hedda?

2005-08-11 [Font]: I already have, but he is busy with hardware and moving.

2005-08-11 [-deleted-]: Oh right, thanks. :)

2005-08-11 [-deleted-]: Veltzeh, could you just clarify what a 'travel' novel would be? Or give an example?

2005-08-11 [Font]: Doesn't necessarily have to be a novel, it could be a travel guide.

2005-08-11 [Veltzeh]: Well, I can, but I didn't put that there so maybe you shouldn't ask from me... Well, I'd think it could be like a journal that you make when you travel. It could be fiction or non-fiction as far as I care.

2005-08-11 [-deleted-]: Oh okay I get you both - I was just curious how you define travel.

2005-08-11 [Veltzeh]: Oh hey. I think that the 23rd choice (Play) should be in the "style" category and not the "genre" category. Can we have a separate Possible Styles wiki someplace? X)

2005-08-11 [Font]: Is writing a play, a form of style?

2005-08-11 [Veltzeh]: It's as much a style as novel, short story and poetry, at least... that's what I was talking about.

2005-08-11 [Font]: A play is as much a non-narrative genre as an essay

2005-08-11 [Veltzeh]: Ah, yeah. That too could be put into the "style" category thing, I guess. Will we be able to make suggestions for those, too?

2005-08-11 [Font]: yea sure! ^_^ I would like to see this list narrowed down a bit too. So perhaps style could be created with : novel, poetry, short, play, essay etc

2005-08-11 [Veltzeh]: Yep, sounds good :) So, who will make the wiki and so on?

2005-08-11 [Font]: If no one else volunteers I will :P
